My December 2024 Trip to Amsterdam

Travel has a way of reshaping how you see both the world and yourself and this is one of the main reasons why I love travelling. In December 2024, I left Lagos for the Netherlands on KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, beginning a journey that blended art, culture, festive lights, and connection with people from across the world.

Arrival at Schiphol: First Steps into the Netherlands

As a Flying Blue member, the KLM experience was smooth from Lagos to Amsterdam. The crew was warm, the food and drinks were on point, and the flight carried the kind of service that makes you feel valued. Landing at Schiphol felt like stepping into a European postcard dressed up for Christmas.

Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam’s famous international hub was alive with festive energy, giant Christmas trees decorated with gold ornaments, travelers rushing between flights, and holiday lights glowing at every corner. I stepped out into the icy cold winter morning and couldn’t help admiring the neatness, calm and serenity around the airport.

Settling In: Hostel Life and Global Friendships

Instead of checking into a regular hotel, I chose a mixed hostel. That choice gave me an experience far beyond comfort. it gave me connection and a feeling of being at home away from home. I met travelers from Australia,Hungary, England and other countries, and in the evenings we swapped stories over glasses of beer about where we’d been and where we were going.

Travel does that, it reminds you how wide the world is, and yet how quickly strangers can feel like friends and family when you share space, meals, and laughter.

Amsterdam Days: Art, Fashion, and Festive Streets

I wandered around the city, headed to Amsterdam Centraal Station, that historic red-brick masterpiece at the city’s heart. From there, I took a train to Eindhoven where I met with a potential business partner. My walks around the city unfolded in layers:

  • Art & Museums → The Stedelijk Museum drew me in with modern works that challenge and inspire. Amsterdam’s art is not just on walls—it’s in the streets, the canals, and even in the rhythm of the city.
  • Luxury Shopping → I strolled past the high-end district, with Fendi and Louis Vuitton glowing like jewelry boxes. Their Christmas window displays felt like mini theaters. Even if you’re not shopping, the visuals pull you in.
  • Everyday Amsterdam → Life here is balanced. Neat rows of bicycles lined the streets, Albert Heijn supermarkets carried essentials and I occasionally popped in for groceries, residential areas with tidy brick houses showed the Dutch love for order and calm.

At night, Amsterdam came alive. The Holland Casino glittered, the International Theater Amsterdam shone like a palace wrapped in lights, and the Marriott Hotel glowed in purple and gold. The reflections on the wet streets turned every corner into a painting. I couldn’t help notice how warmth and friendly nature of people of Amsterdam, always eager to help with directions and start conversations.

The city’s Christmas decorations were stunning, glowing warmly against the winter chill. The nightlife was calm but happy, with people gathered in cafes, laughing in the cold, and sharing meals. I loved the food—simple, hearty, and just right for winter evenings. Eindhoven felt like a city that celebrates quietly, but fully.

Reflections: Lessons From My Dutch December

Looking back on my trip, I carried home more than memories:

  • Hospitality Matters – From KLM’s crew to hostel mates from across the world, kindness defines good journeys.
  • Balance is Power – Amsterdam, a city built on water and bicycles, shows what harmony between design and daily life looks like.
  • Travel Resets You – In the Netherlands, I found clarity, perspective, and a reminder that life is bigger than routines.

From Schiphol’s festive airport halls to Amsterdam’s glowing canals and Eindhoven’s winter charm, December 2024 in the Netherlands gave me joy, lessons, and inspiration.

As 2024 ended, I was reminded that travel is more than movement it’s perspective. And the Netherlands, with its art, lights, and people, gave me plenty of that. Looking forward to visiting again.
